Every December, someone stands at a jewelry counter on the Saturday before Christmas, waiting for a ring to be resized that cannot be ready in time. It is rarely about money. It is almost always about the calendar.

So what is the best time to buy jewelry for Christmas in 2026? This guide answers it with dates. It covers the busiest store days to avoid, how long engraving, resizing and custom work take, the 2026 shipping cutoffs, and how to tell a real Black Friday deal from a dressed-up one. Christmas falls on a Friday this year, which squeezes the final week, so planning ahead pays off more than usual.

The short answer.

  • Custom, engraved or resized pieces: order in early to mid November.
  • Deals: Black Friday to Cyber Monday, November 27 to 30, ideally online or early in the day.
  • Shopping in store: weekday mornings in early December, away from the ten busiest days.
  • Shipping: send by December 17 with USPS Ground Advantage, or December 18 with Priority Mail.
  • Avoid if you can: November 27 and December 19, and any afternoon between 2 and 3 pm.

01 / The calendar

When is the best time to buy jewelry for Christmas in 2026?

The best time to buy jewelry for Christmas in 2026 depends on what you are buying. Anything made, engraved or resized for you should be ordered in early to mid November. Ready-made pieces can wait for Black Friday deals or a calm weekday in early December. The last two weeks are for collecting, not choosing.

WhenBest forWhy
Now to mid NovemberCustom designs, engagement rings, engraving, resizingFull selection, and time for the work and for fixes if something is not right
Nov 27 to 30Ready-made pieces on saleBlack Friday and Cyber Monday promotions, best shopped online or early
Dec 1 to 11In-store browsing and last engraving ordersWeekdays are quieter than the December Saturdays
Dec 14 to 18Ready-to-wear gifts and shipped ordersThe shipping cutoffs arrive this week
Dec 19 to 24Pickup of orders, simple in-stock piecesCrowded stores and very little time for any work

Shoppers are planning to go to stores this year. In the ICSC 2026 Holiday Intentions Survey, 88% of consumers said they plan to buy gifts and 93% plan to shop in a physical store, according to ICSC's 2026 holiday shopping survey. The same survey found that 61% plan to use AI tools while shopping, most often to compare prices.

Our take

My rule is simple: if a piece needs a jeweler to touch it, it gets ordered before Thanksgiving. Everything else can wait for the sales. I would rather pay full price in November for an engraved bracelet that arrives on time than save 20% on one that turns up in January.

02 / The crowds

Which days will jewelry stores be busiest?

The busiest in-store day of the 2026 season is expected to be Black Friday, November 27, followed by Super Saturday, December 19. That is the forecast from retail analytics firm Sensormatic Solutions, whose 2026 forecast of the busiest holiday shopping days lists the top ten US days below.

RankDateWhy it is busy
1Friday, Nov 27Black Friday
2Saturday, Dec 19Super Saturday
3Saturday, Dec 12Second Saturday of December
4Saturday, Dec 26Day after Christmas, returns and gift cards
5Wednesday, Dec 23Two days before Christmas
6Sunday, Dec 20Super Sunday
7Saturday, Nov 28Black Friday weekend
8Tuesday, Dec 22Three days before Christmas
9Saturday, Dec 5First Saturday of December
10Monday, Dec 21Last week before Christmas

Six of the ten days fall in the week before Christmas or the day after it, because Christmas lands on a Friday. Sensormatic expects overall store visits to drop 3.5% from last year, but shoppers who do come in tend to know what they want. In 2025, about 35% of holiday store traffic fell on the ten busiest days, and the firm expects a similar share this year.

Not on the list: Christmas Eve

December 24 is not among the ten busiest days in the forecast, but trade press notes it is usually busy for jewelers. By then, there is little time for sizing, engraving or exchanges, so treat it as a pickup day only.

03 / Lead times

How much time do engraving, resizing and custom pieces need?

Engraving, resizing and custom work each add days or weeks before shipping even starts. Jewelers commonly say engraving takes at least 10 business days, sometimes longer in December, and made-to-order pieces often need two to four weeks. Simple ring resizing can take a few hours to a few days, intricate settings one to two weeks.

The order-by dates are our own calculation: we counted back from the shipping cutoffs and added the lead times jewelers quote, with a few days of margin. Each store sets its own deadlines, so check them when you order.

  1. Pick the delivery date you need, usually a day or two before you will give the gift.
  2. Subtract shipping time, using the carrier cutoffs below.
  3. Subtract the jeweler's work time, and ask whether it is counted in business days.
  4. Add a week of margin for a correction, a wrong size or a delayed parcel.

04 / Shipping

What are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

For Christmas delivery within the contiguous US, USPS recommends shipping by Thursday, December 17, for Ground Advantage, Friday, December 18, for Priority Mail and Saturday, December 19, for Priority Mail Express. The dates are on the USPS holiday shipping dates page; Alaska and Hawaii cutoffs are earlier.

05 / Deals

Are Black Friday jewelry deals real?

Black Friday jewelry deals can be real, but a big percentage off is only meaningful if the original price was real too. The FTC's guides against deceptive pricing say a former price should be one at which the item was openly and actively offered for sale, for a reasonably substantial period of time.

  • Track the price of a piece you like for a few weeks before the sale.
  • Compare the same item, with the same metal, karat and stone details, across stores.
  • Look at what is discounted. Jewelers often discount settings and fashion lines rather than the diamonds themselves.
  • Read the metal description. A cheaper piece may simply be plated rather than solid, as our guide to gold vermeil vs gold-filled vs gold-plated explains.
  • Check the return window before you pay, especially for sale items.

A discount is only as real as the price it started from.

06 / Gift ideas

Which jewelry gifts suit each stage of the season?

Personal and made-to-order gifts belong early in the season, ready-made classics fit the sale weekend, and simple pieces in stock are the right choice in the final week. Matching the gift to the time you have left avoids disappointment. The same timing rule applies in spring, as these Mother's Day gift ideas show.

  • Early November: engagement rings and custom pieces. If you are drawn to vintage shapes, read what an Asscher cut is before you visit a jeweler.
  • Black Friday weekend: classic studs, tennis bracelets and chains from lines you already know.
  • Early December: charm bracelets, a charm to add to one they own, or a charmed hoop. Our charm stacking ideas help you choose a piece that fits what they already wear.
  • The final week: in-stock pendants, simple hoops and gift cards.

Our take

For a last-minute gift, I would choose a charm over almost anything else. It is small, it ships fast, it adds to something they already love, and nobody expects it to be engraved.

07 / After Christmas

What about returns and gift cards?

Jewelry returns follow each store's own policy, because stores are generally not legally required to take back items that are not defective or misrepresented. Ask about holiday return windows before you buy, keep gift receipts, and plan exchanges after December 26, the fourth busiest day of the season.

Gift cards from a jeweler are a safe fallback. Under federal rules summarized in the FTC's gift card tips, the money on a gift card generally cannot expire for at least five years from purchase or the last reload. Inactivity fees are allowed only after a year of non-use. A small card to a nearby cafe is also one of the safe gifts for coworkers you barely know.

Frequently asked questions.

When is the best time to buy jewelry for Christmas?

For custom, engraved or resized pieces, order in early to mid November. For deals, Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday (November 27 to 30, 2026) are the main sale days, best shopped online or early in the morning. For ready-to-wear pieces bought in store, weekday mornings in early December are usually calmer than weekends.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy jewelry?

It can be, but check the discount. Under the FTC rules on former-price comparisons, a was price should be a price the item was actually and openly sold at for a reasonable period. Compare prices across stores and look at what is discounted: settings and fashion lines are discounted more often than the diamonds themselves.

What are the busiest shopping days of the 2026 holiday season?

Sensormatic Solutions forecasts Black Friday, November 27, as the busiest in-store day, followed by Saturday, December 19, Saturday, December 12, Saturday, December 26, and Wednesday, December 23. Peak store traffic is expected between 2 and 3 pm.

How late can I order engraved jewelry for Christmas?

Jewelers commonly say engraving takes at least 10 business days, sometimes longer in December, plus shipping time. Ordering by about December 1 leaves a safe margin. Ask the jeweler for their holiday cutoff, because many set one in late November or early December.

What is the last day to ship jewelry with USPS for Christmas 2026?

For delivery by December 25 within the contiguous US, USPS recommends shipping by December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Insure valuable jewelry and ask for a signature on delivery.

Can I return a jewelry gift after Christmas?

Only under the store's own policy. Stores are generally not legally required to accept returns unless an item is defective or was misrepresented, so ask about holiday return windows and keep gift receipts. Exchanges go faster after the December 26 rush.

The takeaway

In 2026, order anything custom, engraved or resized by mid November, use Black Friday weekend for ready-made pieces, shop stores on weekday mornings, and ship by December 17 or 18. Christmas on a Friday makes the last week crowded, so the earlier you plan, the more choice and calm you keep.
