Mother's Day gifts: a daughter hugging her mother, who holds a bouquet of peach flowers

Gift guide  ·  6 min read  ·  Updated October 2026

Mother's Day 2027 falls on Sunday, May 9, and the gift that lands best is the one that fits how she spends her days. These Mother's Day gift ideas run from a thin gold necklace to breakfast in bed, grouped by the kind of mom you are shopping for.

Which gift fits your mom?

Match the gift to her week, not her age. If she wears jewelry every day, give a simple necklace; if she is worn out, give her a slow morning. If she says she has everything, make something with your own words and photos, and if she lives far away, send flowers early.

Mother's Day gift chart: a sterling or gold necklace if she loves jewelry, breakfast in bed for a quiet day, a photo album and card if she has everything, flowers sent early if she lives far away
Start with how your mom likes to spend a day. Based on: the Library of Congress for the second-Sunday date.

The sections below follow that chart, with budget and timing at the end. If you are shopping for the holidays instead, our Christmas gift ideas for mom work the same way.

Jewelry for the mom who wears it every day.

Start with a pendant, since it needs no ring or wrist size. Choose sterling silver or solid gold in a plain shape, and check the stamp before you pay.

A fine chain and a small pendant go with whatever she already owns. A circle, a hexagon or her initial stays easy to wear for years.

If you choose silver, look for the word sterling or the number 925. Under the FTC's rules for the word sterling, a piece may carry that name only if it is at least 925/1,000ths pure silver, which is 92.5% silver. A plated piece has to be described as plated or coated.

Ask before you buy

Ask whether the chain and pendant are solid sterling or plated, and get the answer in writing on the listing or the receipt. A seller who cannot answer is a reason to shop elsewhere.

Tuck in a note about how to clean silver jewelry at home, since silver darkens with wear.

A birthstone piece.

A pendant or ring with her birthstone, or one stone for each child, makes the gift about the family. GIA's list gives garnet for January, emerald for May and sapphire for September, among others.

Emerald shows what to ask about. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, but it usually has internal inclusions that dealers call a jardin, or garden, according to GIA's emerald page. Ask whether the stone has been treated, because gems are sometimes treated to change color, clarity or durability.

Pearl earrings.

Pearl is the June birthstone on GIA's list, and a pair of studs works with almost any outfit. Check that the backs fit snugly, because a loose back is how an earring goes missing.

If her ears are sensitive, ask what metal the posts are made of. If she wears bracelets more than earrings, a charm is a size-free gift, and our stacking ideas for charm bracelets show how to add one.

This table puts the checks for each jewelry gift in one place, so you can screenshot it before you shop.

The one I would pick

If she wears jewelry at all, I would start with a plain pendant she can put on without thinking. A statement piece sits in a drawer until the right occasion, while a small one gets worn on an ordinary Tuesday. If she never wears jewelry, skip this section and plan her morning.

Gifts for a quiet day at home.

Cook, clean up and stay off your phone for a few hours, then add one small thing she can hold.

Breakfast in bed.

Make what she likes and does not usually cook for herself, such as eggs, fruit or good coffee. Bring it on a tray with a flower in a glass, and plan the cleanup so the kitchen is not waiting for her afterward.

If you add a scent to the tray, check what she wears now; our guide to the best body sprays for women runs from light florals to warm vanilla. Skip it if she has said scents bother her.

Ask the florist what is in season and how long the stems should last, and add a vase if she does not own one.

If she lives far away, order from a florist near her and check the delivery date the shop promises. Then call her on the day.

An afternoon out.

A lunch, a class or a walk she has been meaning to take counts as a gift when you do the planning. Book it yourself and tell her only what to wear.

Keepsakes for the mom who has everything.

Your own words or pictures are what make a keepsake work, and it costs little.

A photo album with captions.

Pick twenty or so photos from the past year or two and write one line under each: where it was, who was there, what you remember. Order the prints early and leave yourself a week of cushion.

Then sit down and go through it with her on the day.

A handwritten letter.

Write three things she taught you, one story only the two of you know, and one thing you want to do together this year. Use a real pen and keep it to one page.

Put it in a card with the flowers or the album, so the letter is the first thing she opens.

What do people spend on Mother's Day?

In NRF's 2026 Mother's Day survey, shoppers planned to spend a record $38 billion, an average of $284.25 each across all gifts. Jewelry led the categories at $7.5 billion, ahead of special outings at $6.4 billion, electronics at $4.4 billion and flowers at $3.2 billion.

Mother's Day spending in 2026: a projected record 38 billion dollars in total, 7.5 billion on jewelry, 284.25 dollars per person and 6.4 billion on special outings
Jewelry is the biggest single category of Mother's Day spending. Sources: NRF's April 2026 press release.

These are projections from 7,877 U.S. adults surveyed April 1 to 8, 2026, so they show what is common, not what any one mom expects. My calculation: jewelry is about 20 percent of the projected total, since $7.5 billion divided by $38 billion is 19.7 percent.

Set your own number first. A letter, a photo album or breakfast in bed can sit far below that $284.25 average and still be the gift she keeps.

Order early, then add the card.

Mother's Day is always the second Sunday in May. Congress passed a law setting it, and President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation, as the Library of Congress's Mother's Day guide explains. In 2027 it falls on May 9.

Engraved jewelry and anything shipped needs lead time, so read the shop's stated order-by date and buy a few days before it. Check the spelling of any engraving twice before you pay.

  • Ask for a gift receipt and read the return policy.
  • Confirm the delivery date, and allow a few days of cushion.
  • Check the spelling on any engraving.
  • Write the card before the day, not on it.

Mother's Day gifts, answered.

When is Mother's Day in 2027?

Sunday, May 9, 2027. In the United States it is always the second Sunday in May.

Which Mother's Day gift category gets the most spending?

By projected dollars in NRF's 2026 survey, jewelry came first at $7.5 billion, followed by special outings at $6.4 billion and electronics at $4.4 billion.

How much should you spend on a Mother's Day gift?

There is no set amount. NRF's 2026 survey projected an average of $284.25 per person across all gifts, but a letter, a photo album or a home-cooked breakfast costs far less and still counts.
